Catalina Island from La Romana

The Dominican island, not a harbour town

Catalina Island in this guide is the island off the southeast coast of the Dominican Republic, the one cruise passengers discuss from La Romana. It is a small island day: reef, clear water, and a snorkelling character. It is not a hillside town of tiled roofs and a yacht harbour. If a photograph shows that kind of town, it is the wrong Catalina. This site does not use photography for that reason.

The island’s interest is the water. People choose it when they want to swim and look at a reef more than they want a long beach stay. That is the opposite emphasis from Saona, and a completely different day from Altos de Chavón, which is stone, lanes and a river view on the estate.

How the day commits you

Catalina is a boat day. You leave the cruise terminal, spend the middle of the call on the water and at the island, and you need a finished plan for getting back. This page does not say how long the ride is, where the boat leaves, or who runs it. Those facts change and they are not ours to invent.

Relative to Saona, Catalina is usually discussed as the more compact island day — the one people choose when snorkelling matters more than the beach picture. Relative to a town or Altos morning, it is still the choice that spends the call on a boat. Sea state matters. A rough-water day is a reason to prefer land, not a reason to assume the island will be calm.

The search that pairs it with Altos

Many people look for a Catalina outing together with Altos de Chavón. The pairing is logical because the two stops do not duplicate each other. It is also the pairing most likely to overrun a cruise day if both are treated as full visits. The trade-off is written on the Altos page. This page’s job is to keep Catalina as its own subject: a Dominican reef island, worth choosing on its own when the water is the point.
